  • ½ cup Whole Milk Half-and-half is a good substitute.

Method
 

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Tenderize the beef round steak using a meat mallet, season with salt, pepper, and a light dusting of flour.
  2. Melt butter in a skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the seasoned steak for 4-5 minutes on each side.
  3. Remove steak, add onions, peppers, and mushrooms to the pan. Sauté until tender.
  4. Stir in tomato paste, cook for 2 minutes, then add beef broth and simmer to thicken the gravy.
  5. Return seared steak to the pot, cover, and braise for about 1 hour and 45 minutes.
  6. Peel and chop russet potatoes, boil until fork-tender, then mash with milk, salt, and pepper.
  7. Slice the Swiss Steak, pour gravy over it, and serve with creamy mashed potatoes.
