Preparation
- Preheat oven to 325°F (160°C) and prepare two 8-inch round cake pans with parchment paper.
- Sift together cake flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a bowl.
- Mix in room-temperature unsalted butter until the mixture resembles wet sand, about 2-3 minutes.
- Add buttermilk and vanilla extract; mix on medium speed for 2 minutes until smooth.
- Incorporate eggs one at a time, mixing until fully blended.
- Divide batter between prepared pans and smooth the tops.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes. Check for doneness by inserting a toothpick.
- Cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.
- Prepare frosting by melting butter and combining with dark brown sugar in a saucepan.
- Whisk in heavy cream off heat and gradually add powdered sugar.
- Frost cooled cakes and sprinkle flaky sea salt on top.
- Allow to set and serve.
